Practical guidance on when and how to use AI in patient education, with verification workflows that keep your content safe and accurate.

What We Cover

Practical learning grounded
in real-world experience

This training is built on genuine hands-on experience using AI for patient education — what works, what doesn't, and exactly why it matters to understand the difference.

01

How AI actually generates text

LLMs work by predicting likely text from patterns in training data. Even with tools like web search bolted on, they can produce confident, fluent output that is subtly or substantially wrong.

02

Prompting effectively: the PRECISE framework

Purpose, Role, Explicit Instructions, Context, Inclusions, Scope, Examples. A structured approach that consistently produces better starting points for patient-facing content.

03

Getting the tone right for patient audiences

AI often defaults to clinical language or swings the other way and produces text that can sound patronising. Getting the tone right for patients means learning to revise with empathy, plain language, and appropriate caveats.

04

Four-stage verification — every time

Source-checking, clinical review, patient review, and version control. Every piece of AI-assisted content must go through all four stages before it reaches patients.

05

Red flags and common failure modes

Confident but unsourced claims. Fabricated citations. Smoothed-over clinical nuance. Outdated guidelines. Knowing what to look for, especially when output reads most polished.

06

When to use AI — and when not to

Patient stories and lived experience are never AI-generated. A clear decision framework helps teams identify where AI genuinely helps and where it doesn't belong.

Prompting Framework

The PRECISE Framework

Sessions introduce a structured prompting approach that produces better first drafts for patient-facing content, and shows teams why the prompt matters as much as the task.

01

AI Without Fear: A First Look for Patient Groups

A gentle entry point. What AI is, what it isn't, and what it can realistically do for a small charity team. For teams who want permission to start experimenting.

02

Writing Better Prompts: Getting Useful Drafts First Time

Practical prompting for patient content, introducing the PRECISE framework through live demonstration with real healthcare writing tasks.

03

Verifying AI Output: Spotting the Red Flags

A focused session on the four-stage verification workflow. Ideal for teams already using AI who want to do it more safely and systematically.

04

Plain Language at Speed: Using AI to Simplify Clinical Content

One of the most useful applications of AI for patient education. How to get consistent plain-language drafts from clinical source material — with practical demonstrations.

05

Translating and Adapting Content with AI

Reaching your community in more languages. Where AI can genuinely help, where cultural adaptation still needs a human, and how to work with a professional translator alongside AI.

06

Easy Read with AI: What Works, What Doesn't

The specific craft of Easy Read. Where AI can accelerate drafting, where it falls short, and why final review by someone with lived experience is non-negotiable.

07

Turning Your Content into Audio

Podcasts, audio leaflets, and voice versions of written content. A practical introduction to tools like NotebookLM and ElevenLabs, with attention to what to check before publishing.

08

AI for Fundraising and Campaigning Content

PAGs write a lot of funding applications, campaign copy, and impact reports. A practical session on where AI can genuinely help, while keeping authenticity and voice intact.

09
90-min deep-dive only

Building an AI Chatbot for Your PAG

A hands-on walk-through: choosing a platform, grounding a chatbot in your own content, setting scope and guardrails, testing for failure modes, and deciding on moderation and disclosure. This one needs the extra time — you leave with something you could actually build.

Any of these topics can also be booked as a 90-minute deep-dive — the same focused topic, with twice the time for hands-on work and group discussion.

Open Cohort Sessions

Ideal for individuals or small teams. Join a scheduled online session alongside people from other PAGs and charities — the cross-organisational discussion is valuable in itself. Hearing how others approach the same challenges is something a single-organisation session can't replicate.

Bespoke Group Sessions

For larger teams who want to train together online, bespoke sessions can be shaped around your organisation's content, tools, and priorities. Get in touch to discuss what would work best.

Follow-Up Consultancy

One-to-one consultancy is available after any session — whether you want to work through a specific content challenge, develop a verification workflow, or draft an AI-use policy for your organisation.

About Me

Catherine Richards Golini, PhD

Medical writer · Plain language consultant · GenAI trainer for patient advocacy groups

I'm a medical writer and healthcare communications specialist with two decades of experience in language, technology, and healthcare. As Patient Resources Manager at Karger Publishers, I led patient education strategy and content development across oncology, haematology, rare diseases and women's health, authoring and editing books, information leaflets, plain language summaries and video scripts for patients and lay audiences, and building partnerships with patient advocacy organisations across Europe, the UK, and the US.

Alongside this, I've trained adult learners throughout my career — teaching medical English and healthcare communication to medical professionals and adult learners across a range of clinical fields, and working as a teacher trainer in the same area. My sessions draw on both: subject expertise, and the craft of teaching it.
